Energy Efficiency and Technology

Our lives have started becoming more and more reliant on the use of Technology. With every passing day we come across a new invention and the very next day we are adapting to the change because in one way or the other it is bringing ease and comfort into our lives. The best thing about technology is the fact that it is adding efficiency in each and every aspect that it is being engraved within.

Come to think of the automobile industry alone, we have been evolving from coal combustion engines to fuels that produce less pollution and now we have recently made the transition into electric vehicles that produce minimum to no pollution at all. All this has been done with the integration of technology and analytics.

Technology and Energy Efficiency

With the introduction of new technological concepts such as Artificial Intelligence and Internet of things, there has been an addition of efficiency into the power industry. Efficiency is the most crucial thing that we need within the power industry, based on the growing requirement of electricity. It has been predicted that by the year 2020 we would require 20% more electricity whereas we will be producing only 10% by that time due to the scarcity of resources.

Let’s look at how IoT can help us achieve efficiency by revealing some fun facts and ideas about it.

Being Smart about Energy

The key component that the IoT can add is new data; this will help in converting standalone devices and hardware into data providing ones. With the use of this useful data, companies and enterprises can have a better understanding of their energy consumption. The data can aid the user in knowing the timings when their energy usage is hitting the peak; it can help them discover new insights into their usage which can add up to the efficiency and reduction of cost, overall.

For instance, imagine a situation where an office building is integrated with smart lighting. They would be aware of the situation if a specific room in the building is consuming a large amount of energy. The company would take necessary actions against it and thus lower their consumption.

Connectivity

The basic ideology of IoT is to connect all the devices with each other so that they can operate in parallel with each other. Connecting devices can predict the usage patterns which in turn can help in keeping the overall usage of energy to the minimum. The insight provided by the sensors can set the cooling or the heating according to the temperature, this can keep everything optimized and in place.

For example, imagine a situation where you are running late for office and you forget to turn off the Air Conditioning. During the hours you spend at office, the Air Conditioning would be running for no reason at all. What IoT can do is allows you to turn off the Air Conditioner remotely using the cloud or simply a smartphone application.
